The United Youth performing arts competition is a public forum that allows students to express themselves not only through writing their own theater scenes and poetry but also through performance art. This event strives to use participation in the performing arts as a vehicle to develop the life skills (social skills, communication skills, self-discipline, a strong work ethic, an understanding of the team concept and self-esteem) necessary to answer the challenges of our time. Another purpose of the competition is to expand students' appreciation and advocacy in shaping their worlds, and to prepare students through classrooms, forums, and competition for participation in their world through the power of expression. Students will write and create works of literature that are relevant to not only their lives, but also to their community. Participants are also encouraged to write pieces about social injustice, which will further grow the students’ knowledge of the world and pertinent problems that are being faced in different cultures. The theme for this year’s competition is “Inspire Me.” Students are asked to inspire each other and adults around them to change the world in which they live in. Students will inevitably gain knowledge in many different arenas while gaining a sense of respect, pride, perseverance and self-confidence.
Students will spend much time preparing for their chosen events with their coaches and fellow classmates. Students will learn consistency, perseverance, and dedication. On the day of competition students will be separated into sections according to their specific events. There will be three sections per event. Events include monologue, poetry, poetry duo and more. Six students will compete against each other in each section per event. All students will perform their pieces at least twice. Students will compete in two preliminary rounds with a different judge and different performers in each round. After the two preliminary rounds are completed, students’ scores will be calculated and the top six students from each event will move onto finals. During the final round students will be judged by three judges in each event. After the final round is over, the scores from the two judges will be calculated and final scores will be tallied. Students will then attend an awards ceremony where the top six students from each event will be given awards from first to sixth place.
